Description

"The Spar Box" is an easy and very enjoyable read. It blends the little known history of mining in the North of England with that of Southwestern Virginia in the early 1800s. The fictional English immigrants in the story who brought their mining skills to the Virginia western frontier are based on extensive genealogical research. Readers will be tempted to consult maps to learn more about the places mentioned in he book and to search online for more examples of the miners' folk art of making spar boxes.
