There's a lot to like about Loretta Hall in Steve Brewer's A BOX OF PANDORAS. She's the president of the International Michael Girard Fan Club, having become enamored with Girard as a teen growing up in rural Pandora, NM. She's spunky, loyal, nosey, and condemned to be one-upped by fellow Pandora resident, Mitzi Tyner, "Miss Everything-All-the-Time." But Loretta's excited about the upcoming film festival in Santa Fe where Girard himself will appear, and his assistant has promised Loretta an hour-long interview. (Top that, Mitzi Tyner!) She and her steadfast husband Harley brave the opening night gala, but soon the murders begin. And, of course, Mitzi turns up. This is a great romp, making fun of Hollywood types, eastern NM good ole boys, and Santa Fe snobs. The mystery is woven through the humorous scenes, all told through Loretta's voice which I swear has a slight Texas twang. A BOX OF PANDORAS is a winner, and I hope Loretta will be a continuing character in future Brewer books.
