Back in 1981, Peter Gordon and David Cunningham (former producer for This Heat, member of the Flying Lizards and founder of the Piano label...) met one day at Michael Nyman's house. The two quickly struck up a friendship and would find their paths crossing repeatedly in Europe over the next ten or so years. Of couse they seized these chance meetings as the opportunity to produce the material that would later evolve into The Yellow Box.All manner of instruments (both raw and prepared) come into play along with various found sounds and disembodied voices that drift in and out like strangers in the fog. But the compositions never become noisy or overwhelming, the whole thing has a remarkable dream-like feel to it. Albums like this are what made me fall in love with music in the first place. A remarkable sonic artifact wrapped up in an immaculate case designed by John Wozencroft.
