For my money, there have been just three or four great--GREAT, like Shakespearean great--large bands in the history of jazz: the best of Ellington's 20's-40's outfits, Basie's mid-late 30s bands, Goodman's classic outfits, and Mingus's late 50s-60s workshop combos. (And just to say, for me the Ellington and Mingus bands reign o'er all.) So...this box, containing what have to be the best recordings of Ellington's greatest bands from his peak creative period is...well, do the math. It doesn't get better than this.
