There is no other recording like Public Image Ltd.'s Metal Box. Even if removed from its origins, it is - as a whole - a rare and unique example of uncompromising artistic expression in the post punk era. I've obsessed over these records for as long as I can remember, and now have six copies on vinyl - three of the original 1979 issues in their round metal tins, one Second Edition, one 2006 4MWB reissue in faithful replica of the metal tin and now this behemoth set in its giant square tin. The extras are the highlights on this expanded set, having listened to the original material for decades. Oddities like Half Mix Mega Mix which reprises the protofunk bassline from Public Image: First Issue's Fodderstompf, Unknown Instrumental 2 1980 which previews concepts found on Flowers Of Romance, variations and alternate mixes like Music From An Oven, Radio 4 Symphony Suite and the standout Home Is Where The Heart Is, add richness to the original album and are definitely worth a listen. The accompanying 1979 live recording at Russell's Club (later known as The Factory) adds more insight into how the band operated in a live setting during the time. Beautifully packaged with unique sleeves, a picture booklet and poster, this is a worthwhile edition of a monumental, seminal and groundbreaking record.
