Description
Amazon.com Though they're recognized as a seminal influence on American rock music (variously fostering the careers of Neil Young, Stephen Stills, CSN&Y, Richie Furay, Poco, and even Loggins & Messina), L.A.'s Buffalo Springfield were perpetually star-crossed by personal squabbles and legal travails during their two-year tenure. Even this extensive four-disc overview was delayed for a decade by disagreements among the Springfield alums. Arranged chronologically, the set offers up a wealth of previously unreleased demos by band mainstays Young, Stills, and Furay, mostly spare acoustic performances (a number of which didn't make the final cut on the band's three albums) that challengingly deconstruct the Springfield's savory blend of folk rock, blues, country, and psychedelia. Young's work is a particular revelation; his songs reveal a wizened, often weary mindset that belies the fact he wasn't yet 21 at the time of the band's inception. Disc 4 is devoted to complete, digitally remastered versions of the band's first two albums (the debut in Young and Stills's original, preferred mono mix), which makes for convenient listening, even if it duplicates much of the previous three discs. There's also a complete absence of live tracks; that's unfortunate, as the band's stage performances have achieved legendary status. Still, this anthology is filled with gratifying surprises, from Young's always revealing work to Stills's roots-conscious craftsmanship (and quirky collaborations like their unreleased Beach Boys-meets-Folkways instrumental "Kahuna Sunset") to Furay's sweet pop tenor. --Jerry McCulley

at the current price for this boxset , you can't go wrong. When I saw crosby stills nash and young in denver doing a reunion concert in 2006? or so. Crosby was teasing Young about this boxset on stage. It was expensive , back then. Now it's not and you get all of the first two ablums on here. Then a lot of rarities. Which is all you could expect. If you buy this set you won't need to buy their first two albums on cd , you now have them, You will need to buy the last one 'last time around' though. I would say that it would have been nice to have had some live tracks. I wonder if any live recordings exist of this band? . At this point we may never see them even if they do as time marches on sadly. Still you get a lot of protocountry rock here and rock here that is of it's time and well done. This is music from it's era but they made real music back then. It would lead to the great band poco , though and of course crosby stills nash and young. So it's not as advanced as those bands would become because this is from 1966-68.. but the songs are all good here and well done middle to late sixties precountry rock etc. I like it. And it reminds me of the beau brummels 'bradleys barn' a great cd from the same era. So at the price this is at now you can't go wrong. When this first came out in 2001 it was not cheap at all and it was a large boxset. now it's a small cd package with four cds in it. the long box is long gone but that saves money. the long box did look cooler. but you paid MUCH more for the same music. The suond is better here as well.
